I am not interested in color for color’s sake and light for light’s sake. I am interested in them as means of expression.Robert Henri, The Art Spirit

This painting is part of how I process my grief over losing my daughter, Taylor, and how I make it real.

Every element was planned. The yellow and the blue sit apart, divided by a thin gold line, but they belong to each other. Together they make green. In the lower left, the green is already there. A trail runs between the colors, connecting what is separate.

What I can’t answer, and what the painting won’t answer either, is which direction it’s moving. Is the green the beginning, and the bottom will slowly fill in? Is it the end? Is the whole painting fading, or filling? The lower right is left unsettled on purpose. That’s where the question lives.

Henri wrote that color is a means of expression. Here, the color is the expression: two things apart, still joined, becoming something new.

Connection. Separation. Together.
